We release the F1000Research BioJS collection. Consisting of 12 articles about BioJS functional components, a 2014 status report and an introductory editorial, the BioJS collection provides a representative sample describing BioJS’s current state of the art.

BioJS is an open-source community-based project that boasts 39 different functional components contributed by developers from around the world. BioJS’s modular, clear design enables users to find and utilise specific functionality without having to know much programming. A description of the component’s functionality, design attributes and implementation, a use case, and potential applications are included in each article.

BioJS is a global initiative established to allow bioinformatics developers to easily share, reuse and discover JavaScript applications for visualisation of biological molecules. Visualisation of these data is essential for researchers to rapidly generate hypotheses and translate them into valuable knowledge. With data-driven research gaining momentum in the life sciences, the F1000Research BioJS Collection is expected to be a key source for dissemination of knowledge and attribution of recognition.
